The FUE technique consists of removing follicular units individually, one by one, using a cylindrical scalpel called a “punch” which can range from 0.7 to 1 mm in diameter. This procedure can be performed manually or motorised.

This technique minimises the patient’s recovery time and significantly eliminates the stigma of scarring in the donor area. On the other hand, the procedure can be performed under local anaesthesia only or with sedation.

To perform the FUE technique, the patient is traditionally shaved completely. This has evolved with the appearance of different motorised devices and different punches allowing the extraction to be carried out without the need to shave the patient completely (Non-Shaved FUE Technique) or with long hair (Long Hair FUE Technique) with the limitations in terms of indications that these entail.

In our clinic we perform the procedure under local anaesthesia, i.e. the patient is awake and conscious at all times.

Anyone with a good donor area can benefit from a FUE hair implant surgery. However, the exact results will depend on how advanced your hair loss process is and how many healthy follicles you have available.

• Documentation. When you arrive to the clinic, we’ll take photographs from all necessary angles with wet and dry hair and the area to be transplanted will be delimited.
• Shaving. The entire head will be shaved with a 0.5mm headless razor.
• Donor area delimitation. Safe donor area and transition areas (not safe) are delimited. The areas are measured in cm2 and more photographs are taken with different devices to later study the patient’s donor capacity.
• Extraction. This part of the process is performed with the patient lying down and under local anaesthesia.
• Rest. After the extraction, a short break is taken so that the patient can have something to eat and drink and make a phone call to his or her relatives if he or she wishes.
• Implantation. Prior to the implantation of the units, the design is made, the patient is shown the drawing and once the patient gives his or her consent, the area is anaesthetised and the units are placed.

Unlike the majority of interventions and surgical procedures, hair transplantation does not have an immediate result.

The closest we can get to an idea of the final result in the short term is 10-15 days after the scabs have fallen off, when all the transplanted hair can still be seen in its corresponding place in the recipient area.

Subsequently, between 15-20 days and 2 months after surgery, the transplanted hair falls out as the follicular units enter their resting phase as a response to the “trauma” suffered in the surgical act. In this period the patient looks the same or slightly more depopulated than before the transplant.

From the fourth month onwards activity begins to be seen and the units start their growth phase again. It is at this point that significant changes begin to be seen.

Once this process has begun, the transplant evolves month by month, and it can be seen how the coverage of the treated area progressively increases.

The final result can be assessed a year or a year and a half after the intervention.

Ten days after the operation the scabs on the recipient area, as well as the marks on the back and the inflammation are not visible and therefore the appearance is that of a shaved person. What remains for 4 to 6 weeks is the redness of the skin, which is more noticeable at first, of course, but fades as the weeks go by.

Regarding your physical activity, the first 10 days post-surgery are essential for the “fixation” of the follicular units in their receptor area. Therefore, you should avoid doing any kind of sport during this period of time.

Once the 10 days are up, you can get started with physical activity that does not entail a risk of physical traume, i.e. you can go running or do cardio and/or weight training in a gym.

One month after the operation, you can do any type of sport, and you can also use bicycle or motorbike helmets or tight-fitting hats such as swimming pool hats.
